Originally, Boxers retained their breeding from fighting dogs and they were the participants of bull bating. The roots of the Boxer breed traces back to the 16th century, at which time dogfights were very popular. Since the Boxers uses in the early ages as fighters in the bloody sport of bull bating, survival of only the strongest animals created a pure pedigree representing only the best as well as the strongest.
Later on, some of these breed representatives emigrated with their owners from England to America. Then breeding with a more soft character occurred as a function of prohibition of dog fighting resulting in a smaller size, longer legs, and now speedier movement.

The name of the breed came from the main function of their task fulfillment and that was to attack the bull. It was a furious animal when attacking the bull. At first it attacked swiftly seizing hold of the bull's eye, tongue, mouth or lip and holding it, notwithstanding the bull's enormous efforts to get free itself from the dog.
Boxer is a good fight dog. During the Middle Ages, when the sport of bating was popular, this dog was the best one to fight a bear, lion, monkey, badger and rats. It is quite normal that during these fights only the strongest dogs won and survived. Boxers were also quick and they easily over passed big distances.
